How we work

Most projects start with a conversation about what you actually need, not a catalog of what we would like to sell you. We ask questions first, and we keep asking until we understand the outcome you are after and the constraints you are working within. Budget, timing, and the people who have to live with the result all shape the answer, and none of them come through in a form submission.

What we agree to goes in writing before anyone commits. A clear scope protects both sides. It tells you exactly what you are buying, and it tells us exactly what we have promised, which is the only fair basis for holding anyone accountable later.

You deal with the same person from estimate through completion. There is no layer of account managers between you and the people doing the work, and no handoff where the details of what you asked for quietly go missing.

We quote firm. When conditions change and the price has to move, you hear about it before anything proceeds, not on the final invoice. A surprise on a bill is a failure of communication, and we treat it that way.

You will hear from us on a regular basis while a project is open, including when there is nothing good to report. Bad news early is worth far more to you than good news late, and we would rather have an uncomfortable conversation on Tuesday than an expensive one in six weeks.

We answer the phone after the invoice is paid. A relationship that ends at final payment was never much of a relationship. Most of our work comes from clients who have hired us before, or from someone they told about us, and we would like to keep it that way.

Integrity, and what it means on a job site

Integrity is the foundation of a good name and an essential ingredient of real success, in life and in business. We hold to that standard and we expect our clients to hold us to it. Stated as a value it costs nothing, so here is what it actually means in the way we conduct ourselves.

We do not bid what we cannot staff. Taking a commitment we are not confident we can meet is a decision to disappoint someone later, and no amount of optimism at signing changes that.

We do not bury changes. Anything that affects your cost or your schedule is raised as soon as we know about it, in plain language, with the options laid out. You make the call, not us.

When we are wrong, we say so. Mistakes happen on every project of any size. The question is whether they get acknowledged and corrected or defended and argued over, and we would rather absorb the cost of being straightforward than spend the goodwill.

We treat the people we work with the way we expect to be treated. Employees, subcontractors, and suppliers are paid on the terms we agreed to, and they get the same honesty our clients do. People who are dealt with fairly do better work, and everyone can tell the difference.

We respect what is yours. Your property, your schedule, your tenants and neighbors, and your ability to keep operating while we are there. Being easy to have around is part of the job, not a courtesy on top of it.

We turn down work that is not a good fit, and we will tell you honestly when someone else is better suited to what you need. Saying no early costs us a job. Saying yes to the wrong one costs us a reputation, and that is not a trade we are willing to make.
